Meta-Reflection #1

Explain how adolescent development will influence you as a teacher?

When I think about teaching and how it evolves. It evolves by new information and how a student learns most efficiently. Therefore teaching is directly connected to adolescent development. Which means that my teaching will be influence by it. From what I have learned it seems that the best connection between adolescence and its influence on me as a teacher is between Brain Rules and what adolescence is. An example of this relation is the increasing trend of dependence on technology and the attention span of adolescents.

Teaching of today, is partially paper based and partially technology based from my own experience. Adolescent development will influence me as a teacher by incorporating more technology based content. These could include the 3D devices that I previously mentioned in Topic 3, or students taking more electronic notes in class. Overtime teaching has changed, in an article called "How has Technology Changed Education?" they talk about how previously books were used and the teacher was the person full of information, but now the teacher can be the facilitator of the students research. An article by Dr. Katherine McKnight called "Top 12 Ways Technology Changed Learning" talks about how you can use extended classroom communities to further students learning, as well as using interactive textbooks to make the content more captivating and accessible. Another article called "6 Ways Social Media is Changing Education" talks about how social media can be used to connect teachers with students, classrooms, parents, and also how you can have social media activities, such as a Twitter Scavenger hunt.

All of these examples and articles show how technology has affected teaching already. This is also how adolescent development has influenced teaching and me as a teacher. Adolescents are one of the first generations to always have technology, so they are heavily dependent and they would learn best from it. Technology will continue to be a key role in the development of adolescents and the evolution of teaching. By using these technologies, activities, and social media it will further the students learning and interest in school because it uses things that the students know how to use really well. These influences on me as a teacher will definitely change how the subject matter is portrayed and my total involvement in how they learn.

Overall, adolescent development will influence me as a teacher in many ways. Some of the ways are: How the lesson is taught, the activities done in class, my overall role as a teacher, and continuously adding and finding new ways to keep them interested in whats being taught. My role will change from a "Master of Knowledge" to a "Facilitator of Learning". The activities will go from research projects in Physics to something like a scavenger hunt of different experiments that show aspects of the lesson to making the class more interesting. The classroom will be extended outside the classroom for students to ask questions in the class community and enhance peer teaching and peer learning. These are but a few ways that adolescent development will influence me as a teacher.
