Topic 8: Identity
How can you help adolescents go beyond a Like or brand and focus on developing their identity or morality in a meaningful way?

A person's identity is formed over time, experiences, self-esteem, and living life. The youth of today uses social media to try to create an identity online through likes, posts, and activities. These online identities don't always match that of their identity in real life. A lot of youth post picture, links, and like groups that represent what their dreams are in life. Some one who wants to travel may like tons of nature posts, or someone who wants to be a doctor may like a lot of group or pages about aspects of medicine. But in real like they may lack the self esteem or belief that they can follow their dreams. This is also the reason why I want to become a teacher. I want to inspire students to follow their dreams. I want to encourage them and nurture them to be confident on what they decide to do with their life. I want to expand their curiosity of what they are into and show them that it's really not as hard as it seems. I want to aid them in the forming of who they are and to not let go of who they are because of society.

As a teacher I would help adolescents go beyond a like or brand and focus on developing their identity by showing them how to do it. I would create a classroom that boosted their self-confidence in who they are. I would ask them existential questions like "Who am I?", "What do I like?", "What was the most difficult experience I have had", "What do I want others to know about me?". As said in a blog called "Who am I?", questions like these will bring a lot of realization to them. This artifact shows me everything I believe in as a teacher. I would give them a safe space to allow them to explore their identity and form one.
