Topic 10: Problems
What do you think is your primary role as a teacher in helping adolescents manage the types of difficult problems addressed in this topic?
My primary role as a teacher in the case of managing the types of difficulties faced in this topic is to support the student and provide them with the help that they need. This can be done in many ways but the first is by noticing it. This can be accomplished by noticing a withdrawal from things they liked before, or by increased anxiety or fear, or by a lack of motivation to name a few ways. I learnt this from my EDPY 304 Topic 10 notes. I can create a positive learning environment and nurture a healthy relationship with students to help them. I would try to help them and talk to them about what they are going through. As stated in the ATA teachers code of conduct , sections 4 and 5 say that I should only divulge information about the student to other people if it is for the safety of the student. In this topic, many important challenges were discussed, so I would tell the administration and counsellors about the challenges students are facings. By doing this they can gain access to resources and support such as crisis centres or help lines, as well as counselling.

Another thing I can do to support this role is take prevention and training programs to help me identify and support students who are going through these challenges as described in the journal called "Supporting minds". This training could lead to ways to open up conversation about these issues like depression, drugs, and other issues that come up. By opening these conversations and having the training to educate them on how to deal with them. This would help the students.
