Topic 11: Resiliency

What is a teacher's main role in supporting resilience either for students in general or in one vulnerable group?

First of I would like to define resilience and how it is expressed in youth. As stated in "Building resilience in Students", resilience is the set of attributes that provides people with the strength and fortitude to confront the overwhelming obstacles they are bound to face in life. This is expressed in students as social, optimistic, energetic, cooperative, inquisitive, attentive, helpful, punctual, and on task. But there are other resilient students who seem withdrawn and harder to understand.

The main role in a teacher for supporting resilience in students is fostering and nurturing it. For this to happen a teacher has to create an environment, expectations, and relationships that help them either find and/or grow their resilience. These things can be done by building positive relationships with them, pointing out their strengths, teaching them social skills, fostering positive emotions, and building a meaning in life as shown on "How to promote resilience in students". By doing these things the students will feel the strength and fortitude that is resilience, and they will be able to confront overwhelming obstacles in life. We can avoid negative emotions and aspects and increase positive ones, and promote a healthier and stronger well being for the students.
